Luckily, there are several things that you can do in the winter months to help eliminate dry skin and keep your body and face in good condition. These things require minimal effort, but they can make a big difference in how your skin looks and feels. Use the following tips to help combat dry, itchy skin in the winter months:

Pay Attention When Bathing

During the winter months, you may need to change your bathing habits if you want to prevent or treat dry skin. One tip is to avoid taking very hot showers or baths, as the hot water can dry out your skin. You are much better off taking short showers and baths in warm water. Also make sure that you use a gentle, moisturizing body wash that does not contain alcohol, retinoids, or added fragrance. When you get out of the shower or bath, bat yourself dry instead of rubbing your skin with a towel. Immediately after showering, take the time to apply a moisturizer to your entire body while your skin is still slightly damp, as doing so will lock in moisture.

Invest in a Humidifier

One of the reasons that dry skin is so common in the winter is because the air is so dry. While you can't do anything about the lack of humidity in the air outdoors, you can control the air in your home. If you want to keep your skin soft during the winter, you may want to seriously consider buying several humidifiers to use in your home. A quality humidifier will add moisture to the air, so your skin will be less likely to dry out.

Light lotions typically are not enough to treat dry skin during the winter months. When your skin needs a lot of moisturizing, you should use thicker creams and ointments on your face and body. If you suffer from extremely dry skin in the winter, it is a good idea to consult a dermatologist. He or she can make recommendations about what products you should use to keep your skin moisturized in the winter. In some cases, a dermatologist may prescribe prescription-strength products to help your skin heal if the dryness has led to cracking or bleeding.
